My Captured Moment – First Day of School… and mixed Emotions!

Obviously Mama had to make a traditional German school bag for the occasion 🙂

If you’ve read my blog post Why we should worry about our children starting school at the age of four you will know that I’ve got mixed feelings about Maya starting school. And trust me, it’s not because I don’t want to let her go! I’m very happy to have some time with little Leo, do yoga or write my blog in peace in quiet!

I’m simply concerned about what they do in these 6.5 hours of school every day… Who are the people that she will look up to? What are they teaching her? Will she experience pressure to learn this or that? Is this too young to start full time education? I myself started school in Germany at the age of six turning seven a month later which might explain why I ask myself all these questions.

“Mama, stop taking pictures!”

Being a summer baby she is one of the youngest in her class but I’m not worried about that. She is bright, confident and by no means a push-over! I just want her to enjoy herself at this age and not worry about learning how to read and write just yet. Four (even five) is too young!

I’m happy that she will get the chance to make new friends, discover new things, learn and have fun!

I’m extremely proud of her and am so grateful that I have the chance to be there every day to support her, listen to her stories, learn about her adventures and help her if ever things get a little bit too much.

These early years are such a special time. Let’s make it really fun and exciting!

So, to my beautiful Maya:

Please enjoy yourself! Don’t worry about writing the letters perfectly.

Don’t worry about learning to read your books yourself just yet… I’m here to help you.
I’m here to share them with you.

Discover the world, try out lots of different things, play with your friends, sing songs, dance, climb, slide, bake mud pies and be really messy!

You are kind, strong and so beautiful inside and out.

I know you will always try your best, you will always make people smile and you will conquer the world with your laughter, brightness and your warm and beautiful heart.

I love you very much, meine kleine Maus.

Deine Mama

…And she’s off… and Mama has a little cry…

  1. Awww!! Such a big milestone, I felt the same about both my girls starting school, I think they start too young in this country. However, they both loved it and we’re fine. I hope she had a great time too xx #mycapturedmoment

  2. Ah Christine, I couldn’t agree more. I hate the thought of my girls being pushed and pressured at the age of four and five. Last year aged five, Lili had a spelling test each week – and not easy words either, second week in and the words included; ‘because’, ‘square’, ‘brother’ along with five more. On the positive side, Maya looks happy and excited in her little ‘first day’ picture. i love seeing these shot. I hope she has a great year!!

Thank you for linking up to #MyCapturedMoment xx

  3. Ah a lovely post and such a huge moment. It seems like such a long time ago for us, yet I remember it like it was yesterday, I am sure she will have the most wonderful time at school, its a great time isn’t it? For us the key has been to let the boys enjoy it, there is no need for pressure at their age x

  4. Aww such a big step, despite entering the world of education at the same age G was last year I feel like you do. Is it too early, is too much pressure put on them and is it really necessary for them to have school in their life just now. So many questions. He has just gone in to year 1 and even on day 4 he said the books were tricky. #mycapturedmoment

  5. Das stimmt! They look so tiny wandering off in their brand new crisp white shirts and slightly too shiny shoes with that massive satchel or bag and you worry so much that they will hate it and miss you. A few years down the line and my girls are confident happy young ladies who head off with a cheery wave. I still remember those emotions though, we all have to just let go of our babies, but it can be tough!
