5 reasons to practice yoga with your kids

I did have my travel yoga mat with me though and mostly practiced with the kids which is usually what I do anyway. You might not get a fully balanced yoga practice (meditation is impossible with toddlers around) but here are some good reasons why you should actually practice yoga with your kids around!

1. It’s fun and changes the energy of your practice!

I love practicing yoga with my kids around! Mainly because they are so cute of course… but they always do something unexpected which usually tests my balance (careful with handstands or headstands!) or simply makes me laugh. They are always keen to get involved and you will definitely love the change of energy which is so uplifting and motivating.

2. It’s good for them

Kids yoga is becoming more and more popular and it’s proven to be great for their focus, coordination, muscle development and their general health and well-being so why not start them early! Here is a Guest Post I’ve written for Mama & More with 5 yoga poses to do with kids which might give you some ideas.

3. They love it!

My daughter always asks when we can do yoga and my son automatically does a downward dog position as soon as he sees a yoga mat! They love copying their parents, climbing on them and simply spending time with the people they love the most!

4. You can learn from your kids

Kids are naturally flexible, they haven’t adapted a bad posture from sitting at the computer or wearing the wrong shoes. Have a look at your little ones’ toes and how they can almost move them as well as their fingers (especially young kids)! I love watching my kids and seeing how effortlessly they can do things that are really difficult for us as adults as our muscles are so tensed. Kids are experimental, fearless and playful which are qualities that we are often lacking as adults.

5. You get to practice yoga

If you are a parent, chances are that you don’t have much time for yourself. You’re happy when you get the chance to take a long shower or drink a hot cup of coffee or tea during the day! Your body and your well-being is important, however, and the better you feel, the better you can be as mum or dad.

I am a stay-at-home mum so I can’t simply go to a yoga class when I want to and my kids are pretty much around me from 7am to 9pm. My daughter doesn’t nap anymore so if I don’t want to practice late at night or very early in the morning I have to do it when they are around. Involving my kids in my yoga practice enables me to do something for myself and it’s something we all enjoy and that is good for everyone in the family!

What is Mummy doing now?? Maybe I should pinch her nose…

  1. This is brilliant, I so want to do this! Just need to remember how to do the poses and get my mat out. My 3 year old loves doing her ‘exercises’.

  2. Awww I love the photos of your kiddies climbing on you and copying – sooo cute!! I’ve done a little bit of yoga with my step daughter who is 8, she’s a bit older (so doesn’t break my back, like Reuben, who will climb all over me!) but she loves it!

Great post, thanks for linking up to #TheList xx

  3. our Grandson is now 21 months old and he goes to Nursery one day a week, I was very pleased to learn that they do little yoga session each day.
