It was not severe enough to require bracing or surgery but it has caused me considerable problems ever since my teenage years (read more about my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yogaberry.net\/staging\/3947\/from-scoliosis-sufferer-to-yoga-teacher-trainee\/\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"outline: none;\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">personal journey here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">). &nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">When I became a yoga teacher I made it my mission to help those affected by scoliosis. Working with children and adults affected by scoliosis on a regular basis I have learned that it is so important to get a diagnosis early.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Why you should check your child for scoliosis<\/h4>\n<p>Scoliosis most commonly developed between the ages of 10 and 15 but I would recommend to start checking your child from the age of 7. There is currently no screening provided in the UK so it&#8217;s important to look out for signs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>What is scoliosis<\/h4>\n<p>Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine which is accompanied by rotation. It affects about 2-3% of the worlds population and is more common in females then males. It is very important to get a diagnosis early enough to be able to get treatment if necessary. Watch the video below to find out how you can check if your child has scoliosis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Checking your child on a regular basis<\/h4>\n<p>Every six months take a good look at your child&#8217;s back and look for asymmetries. Only an x-ray will determine what exactly is going on in your child&#8217;s spine but if we catch signs early enough there is a much better chance of treatment. Always make sure to contact your health professional if you are concerned or notice anything such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>one shoulder blade higher than the other<\/li>\n<li>one hip higher than the other or shifted to the side<\/li>\n<li>one shoulder blade sticking out or more rounding of the ribcage on one side than the other<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Any of the above doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean that your child has scoliosis but it&#8217;s always better to get it checked out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Adams Forward Bend Test<\/h4>\n<p>The Adams Forward Bend Test is an easy way to check if your child has scoliosis. Refer to the video above if you want to find out how to perform the test.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Treating Scoliosis<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Treatment of scoliosis varies and depends on the age of the person affected, degree of curvature and cause of scoliosis (it most cases it&#8217;s unknown!). Some forms of scoliosis can be treated effectively with physiotherapy and keeping an active lifestyle, yoga and Pilates. Others will need bracing or even surgery. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Scoliosis also has a genetic component so bear in mind that if you have scoliosis there is a chance that someone else in your family might have it too.
