Exercise is often recommended but can also have a negative effect due to the imbalanced muscle function. What about yoga? How can yoga help with scoliosis?<\/p>\n<h3>Structural vs Functional Scoliosis<\/h3>\n<p>A <strong>structural scoliosis<\/strong> involves abnormal development of the spine either during fetal development, childhood or adolescence.<\/p>\n<p>A structural scoliosis is <strong>always visible on an x-ray<\/strong> no matter what position the patient might be in. This is in contrast to the <strong>functional scoliosis<\/strong> which might not be visible when the patient is lying down.<\/p>\n<h4>How can you determine if your scoliosis is functional or structural?<\/h4>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.physio-pedia.com\/Adam's_forward_bend_test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam\u2019s forward bend test<\/a> the structural scoliosis would be visible (hump on one side) whereas the functional scoliosis would not be visible.<\/p>\n<p>Functional scoliosis can be caused by <strong>asymmetries in the body<\/strong> due to different muscle strength on one side to the other. It might also be caused by <strong>different leg length<\/strong> which causes the pelvis to tip to one side.<\/p>\n<h3>How can Yoga help with Scoliosis?<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yogaberry.net\/staging\/3947\/benefits-yoga-helps-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">benefits of yoga<\/a> have been proven in many studies and include increased strength and flexibility, balance and stress relieve. But what about practising yoga specifically for scoliosis?
