The Sacral Chakra or Swadhisthana Chakra

We've been working on the Root Chakra and grounding ourselves last week. We've evaluated our foundations and strengthened our to connections to ourselves and others. Today is all about the Sacral Chakra or Swadhisthana Chakra. 

The Swadhisthana Chakra is located around the sacrum and is associated with the colour orange and element of water. When it's open and balanced it helps to go through life with grace and fluidity, allowing to adapt to change with ease, being able to express ourselves in creative ways and feel happy and fulfilled. 


This chakra develops at the age of six months - two years when we are becoming aware of others and start to move around. It's associated with creative instincts, being able to emotionally connect with others and believing that you deserve happiness and pleasure in your life.  

Signs for Swadhisthana imbalance:

  • You can't let go of negative emotions
  • Tendency to addictive behaviour 
  • You feel like you need to create more flexibility and flow in your life 
  • You feel sexually blocked 
  • You would like to overcome feelings of guilt, jealousy and shame
  • Nothing in your life seems to be good enough

Physical Signs

  • problems with kidneys
  • problems with urinary tract 
  • problems with reproductive system
  • governs all liquid elements of the body like blood, lymph, urine and saliva

How to work with the Swadhisthana Chakra

An easy and enjoyable way to work with the Swadhisthana Chakra could be an energy-cleansing bath. Use Epsom salts and 5-10 drops of essential oils. For example clary sage, patchouli, frankincense are all suitable for balancing swadhisthana energy.  

Swadhisthana Chakra 

  • Colour: Orange
  • Sound: VAM
  • Element: Water
  • Yoga Poses: Janu Sirsasana, Badhakonasana, Bridge Pose, Matsyasana (Fish Pose), squats, hip openers 
  • Mudra: Water Mudra, little finger and thumb
  • Yantra: Six Petal Lotus, circle with crescent moon
  • Animal: Makara (mythological animal)
