My Captured Moment – Mummy, Toddler And The Stairs

Well, what you don’t know is that this was at 6pm so not naptime or bedtime. What you also don’t know is that my lovely little toddler climbed into the buggy by herself! So what has happened here that made my toddler decide that she needed a little late afternoon nap?

The answer is the battle of THE STAIRS!! This is actually a daily battle… And everyone who has a strong willed toddler knows that you have to choose your battles carefully! There are actually lots of battles to choose from in our house: what colour plate is acceptable today, when is it acceptable to go in the bath and then come out of the bath, which socks are acceptable, what temperature of milk is acceptable, putting on shoes, walking, not walking and so on and so on…

The stairs is a battle that I had chosen on that day as I find it quite a struggle to carry a one year old and a two and a half year old together up and down the stairs all the time. Yes I could go twice but the two and a half year old is more than capable of climbing the stairs in no time so I thought it was time to once and for all show my little dictator that I’m not her slave!!

As I’ve watched hundreds of episodes of Supernanny (when I still had time and no children) I know that it is absolutely vital that you have to stick to what you say once you have indeed chosen a battle. so here it goes:

Mummy, Toddler and The Stairs

It’s 5.30pm and bathtime so I take the baby and say to the toddler: Let’s go upstairs! It’s bathtime!

Toddler: Mummy hug! (This does not mean give me a hug but carry me, she lifts her arms)

Me: no you can walk. You’re a big girl!

Toddler: no I can’t (throws herself on the floor)

Me: I will help you. Take my hand

Toddler: noooooo (starts kicking and screaming)

This goes back and forth for a while so I go upstairs and put the baby in the bath. I hear screaming, shouting and stuff being thrown around downstairs.

Me: come upstairs, we’re waiting for you! Let’s have a nice bath!

Toddler: noooo!

I try to bribe her (I know not ideal) and say the can watch Peppa Pig on the ipad later if she comes upstairs)

Toddler: noooo!!!!!!

10 minutes later…Toddler is still screaming in anger so I continue to bathe the baby. I will stay strong this time!!

Another 10 minutes later… I notice that it’s very quiet downstairs so I have a look as this usually means trouble!

And what do I see? My stubborn little toddler has decided that it’s extremely important that I carry her upstairs and as I’m not cooperating she has decided to climb into the buggy (which is much more difficult and requires much more skill than climbing up stairs!!!!) and has fallen asleep!

So obviously I have to carry her upstairs now… Toddler 1 Mummy 0… Again… What would Supernanny say!!

  1. Ha ha your toddler sounds very similar to my little two year old. Stubborn is her middle name. She decided to drop her daytime naps about six months ago so come the end of the day she’s shattered. Bless your toddler, they just don’t give up do they? The pushchair was obviously the best option.

  2. It’s amazing how stubborn they can be! I think she might be close to dropping her nap but can’t quite make it which is why we had the situation… Thanks for your comment and love the linkup 🙂 xx

  3. I have a couple of strong-willed little girls so sympathise with you completely. She looks like such a little angel asleep in her buggy – bless her!

  4. Oh bless her – toddlers are funny creatures! 🙂
I wonder what it is about the stairs she doesn’t like it? I think sometimes they just for excuses to be strong-willed! 😉

    1. Absolutely! They are just testing I think… It might also be that she is jealous because I carry her little brother but I tried to make him (11 months) crawl upstairs instead and it still doesn’t make a difference.

  5. Its amazing how much determination they have at that age! I hate to tell you but my most wilful toddler is now my most wilful teenager who loves a good battle.
One idea would maybe be to tell her you need her help? Toddlers love to be helpful (shame the same can’t be said of teens lol) so maybe get her to fetch and carry a few things on one floor and then something that needs to go to another floor, just to get her used to going up and down the stairs?

    1. I will definitely try that!! Thank you! God help us if this will be even worse when she is a teenager… x

  6. Ahhhh… the joys of raising toddlers. You are right, it is really important to pick your battles. But sometimes it is so hard to know which battle. Your toddler may have won the battle but you will win the war. Hugs Mrs H XXXX #MyCapturedMoment

  7. Haha, it amazes me how stubborn they can be and there is absolutely no reasoning with them! Then they go and do something like that, falling asleep and completely throw your plan! Cute capture though xx
